Stable Marriage with Ties and Unacceptable Partners

چکیده
An instance of the classical stable marriage problem involves n men and n women, and each person ranks all n members of the opposite sex in strict order of preference. The effect of allowing ties in the preference lists has been investigated previously, and three natural definitions of stability arise. In this paper, we extend this study by allowing a preference list to involve ties and/or be incomplete. We show that, under the weakest notion of stability, the stable matchings need not be all of the same cardinality, and the decision problem related to finding a maximum cardinality stable matching is NP-complete, even if the ties occur in the preference lists of one sex only. This result has important implications for practical matching schemes such as the well-known National Resident Matching Program [9]. In the cases of the other two notions of stability, Irving [5] has described algorithms for testing whether a stable matching exists, and for constructing such a matching if one does exist, where a preference list is complete but may involve ties. We demonstrate how to extend these algorithms to the case where a preference list may be incomplete and/or involve ties.

Approximability results for stable marriage problems with ties
We consider instances of the classical stable marriage problem in which persons may include ties in their preference lists. We show that, in such a setting, strong lower bounds hold for the approximability of each of the problems of finding an egalitarian, minimum regret and sex-equal stable matching. We also consider stable marriage instances in which persons may express unacceptable partners ...
متن کامل)–Approximation Algorithm for the Stable Marriage Problem
We propose an approximation algorithm for the problem of finding a maximum stable matching when both ties and unacceptable partners are allowed in preference lists. Our algorithm achieves the approximation ratio 2− c logN N for an arbitrarily positive constant c, where N denotes the number of men in an input. This improves the trivial approximation ratio of two.
متن کاملModeling Stable Matching Problems with Answer Set Programming
The Stable Marriage Problem (SMP) is a well-known matching problem first introduced and solved by Gale and Shapley [7]. Several variants and extensions to this problem have since been investigated to cover a wider set of applications. Each time a new variant is considered, however, a new algorithm needs to be developed and implemented. As an alternative, in this paper we propose an encoding of ...
متن کاملDistributed Stable Matching Problems with Ties and Incomplete Lists
We consider the Stable Marriage Problem and the Stable Roommates Problem in presence of ties and incomplete preference lists. They can be solved by centralized algorithms, but this requires to make public preference lists, something that members would prefer to avoid for privacy reasons. This motivates a distributed formulation to keep privacy. We propose a distributed constraint approach that ...
متن کاملA Tight Approximation Bound for the Stable Marriage Problem with Restricted Ties
The problem of finding a maximum cardinality stable matching in the presence of ties and unacceptable partners, called MAX SMTI, is a well-studied NP-hard problem. The MAX SMTI is NP-hard even for highly restricted instances where (i) ties appear only in women’s preference lists and (ii) each tie appears at the end of each woman’s preference list. The current best lower bounds on the approximat...
